20th Anniversary Buergerverein Hansaviertel e.V.

A reason to celebrate!

The Hansaviertel citizens’ association celebrated its 20th anniversary on Wednesday, May 15, at the Akademie der Künste at Hanseatenweg 10.

The Senator for Urban Development, Building and Housing, Christian Gaebler, and the City Councillor for Building in Mitte, Ephraim Gothe, were there to congratulate the association and pay tribute to its commitment to the protection of historical monuments.

For more than 20 years, the members of the citizens’ association have been committed to the city quarter, which has been a listed building since the mid-1990s and was built for the International Building Exhibition “Interbau57” in 1957.

At the time, the buildings were prototypes of social housing in West Berlin – designed and realized by more than 50 international architects. The district has remained a popular and liveable place to live to this day.
The citizens’ association is committed to a good living environment and to the further development of the Hansaviertel, with its special architectural history and present, in line with its listed status. For example, its members succeeded in preventing the planned closure of the Hansa Library years ago and in acquiring funds for the renovation of the Kaiser Friedrich Memorial Church.
In addition to its own publications and detailed information on the Hansaviertel, including on its website, the association regularly offers guided tours for interested parties from all over the world, thereby increasing awareness of this unique architectural monument. The history of the association can be read in the “Festschrift” (see link below), which was produced especially for the anniversary.
For the future, the civic association, together with the partner associations from Karl-Marx-Allee, is striving to apply for the European Heritage Label.
